California Divorce Process

Complete the Paperwork – In Ventura County, you will need to fill out a
Summons and a
Petition in black ink.

Make Copies – You will need the original forms, plus two (2) additional copies of each.

File for Divorce – Take all forms and their copies to the Ventura County courthouse's
Family Law Filing Window and give them to the clerk.

Pay the Fee – Upon filing your divorce papers, you will pay the filing fee.
This fee may be waived by completing a "Fee Waiver Packet" if
you cannot afford it.

Receive Your Copies – The clerk will keep your original divorce forms and return the
copies, stamped as "filed."

Serve the Divorce Papers – One copy of the divorce papers must be served to the other party,
together with a package of blank forms to file their "Response."

File Proof of Service – The person who served the divorce papers to the other part must
complete a "Proof of Service" paper and file it with the Court.
